first fifteen minutes of each morning.
(8:30 – 8:45 a.m.)
2. Every student will participate in SSR (pleasure
reading) for fifteen minutes a day. not
optional and not a study hall
3. Elementary & middle school students
will be expected to do “read aloud” each evening with
a parent. (For tips on how to have a successful
read aloud with your child, click here.)
4. The third Wednesday of each month will be
designated as “Library Day.” All classes
will make a trip to the local branch of the library
on this date each month. The trip is not optional. Students
are expected to check out books during the visit.
5. The Rock School will conduct a “Million
Minutes of Reading” Campaign during each semester.
Students will keep a monthly log and record all
the time they spend doing independent reading outside
of school. Student will earn points toward prizes for
every minute they read each month. When the school reaches
its goal of one million minutes, we will take a special
field trip to celebrate. To print a copy of this
month's Reading Log, click here.
6. The last full week of each month will be
designated as a “TV Turn-Off Week.” Students
will be asked to refrain from television, DVDs, video
games, & computer for the week. Campaign will run
from Monday morning (8 am) through Friday afternoon
(3 pm). Students who participate will be rewarded with
double points on their MMR logs. To read the letter
regarding "TV Turn-off Week" click here.
7. Students will have the option to participate
in a “Book-of-the-Month Club” each month. Students
will meet with a teacher 1-2 days per week at lunch
to talk about the book for that month. Students who
complete the BOTM successfully will get to attend a
special lunch for members only. Parents may also volunteer
to conduct a BOTM Club. To see a list of BOTM Clubs
for this month, please click here.
8. Teachers & parents will model the value
and importance of literacy for students by:
- modeling good reading strategies and enthusiasm
for reading during “Read Aloud.”
- participating in SSR (pleasure reading) with students
each day.
- limiting movies and television programming in school
and at home.
- refraining from “formal” book reports (Alternatives:
Book Shares, Table Talks, etc.)
- keeping lots of books accessible to students at
school and at home.
- creating a basket of reading materials for use during
“free time,” “travel time,” etc.
